U.S. Ambassador, Terence P. McCulley, expresses condolences over Grand-Bassam Attack

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the victims of the terrorist attack in Grand-Bassam and to all of the people of Côte d’Ivoire.  It appears that Grand-Bassam has become the latest scene of heartless and indiscriminate terrorism. Recent events in Africa, and elsewhere, demonstrate that no place is safe from this worldwide phenomenon. Côte d’Ivoire has made tremendous political and economic progress in recent years and yesterday’s episode must not be allowed to diminish what Ivoirians have accomplished.

The United States pledges to support the Government of Côte d’Ivoire in its ongoing investigation and response. We wish to especially thank the Prime Minister and Mayor of Grand-Bassam for their support for the U.S. personnel who were in Grand-Bassam yesterday. We would also like to recognize the bravery and commitment of the security forces that put an end to this senseless attack on innocent people.

It has been my privilege to be the United States Ambassador to this great country and I have witnessed the reinforcement of the strong bonds between our two nations. Côte d’Ivoire is a close and important partner of the United States. I wish to underline that the United States will stand by the Government and people of Côte d’Ivoire in their time of need, now and in the future.
