Security Alert – Africa Cup of Nations

Security Alert – U. S. Embassy Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (January 10, 2024)

Location:  Côte d’Ivoire, countrywide

Event:  The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will take place throughout Côte d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11, 2024.  Games are scheduled for five cities: Abidjan, Bouaké, Korhogo, San-Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.  U.S. Embassy Abidjan advises U.S. citizens to anticipate travel delays affecting roads and airports in host cities.  U.S. citizens should be prepared with sufficient supplies of water, food, fuel, medicine, and financial resources during the tournament should their movements be limited.

U.S. citizens attending AFCON events should be vigilant of their surroundings, have a plan in case they are separated from their group, and avoid displays of wealth that may make them a target for crime.  Follow guidance from tournament organizers regarding security screening and what items are permitted inside the stadium.

U.S. citizens are also advised that medical resources are limited in Côte d’Ivoire, particularly outside of Abidjan, and available care may not be comparable to U.S. standards.  Costs for medical evacuation can exceed $100,000.  U.S. citizens are advised to obtain travel insurance ahead of time, with medical evacuation coverage.
