Publishers & senior editors discuss practical strategies for sustainable media management

A view of participants discussing with American speaker and veteran journalist David Applefield

July 19, 2018

The U.S. Embassy hosted nearly 100 publishers, senior editors, broadcasters, and heads of public and private media outlets at Embassy Abidjan’s American Center on July 19, 2018 to discuss the nuts and bolts of sustainable media management.

Africa Regional Services (ARS) Paris’s American speaker and veteran journalist David Applefield led the discussion on strategies to boost the profitability of small local media organizations and protect editorial departments from the corrupting influence of political, business and other interests.

Participants agreed that the precarious economics of the media business is the biggest threat to press freedom in Cote d’Ivoire. Applefield emphasized the importance of publicity and media-sponsored events for media outlets to access the resources needed to produce high-quality, independent journalism. Applefield and the journalists also discussed how high-quality journalism supports a democratic culture, transparency, and development in areas of government and human rights.
