Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (Fulbright TEA) 2023-2024
U.S. Embassy Abidjan is officially accepting applications for the 2023 – 2024 Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (Fulbright TEA)!
Fulbright TEA is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IREX. The program brings some 160 secondary-level teachers of English, math, science, and social studies from around the world to the United States for a six-week program.
As part of the application, candidates indicate their preference for a program start date in January or September 2024. Teachers are placed at a university that has been competitively selected. The program consists of seminars focusing on subjects such as new teaching methodologies, student-centered learning, content-based instruction, lesson planning, and instructional technology for teachers. Intensive English language instruction will be offered to teachers who need additional practice. TEA includes a practicum of at least 40 hours with a U.S. partner teacher in a local secondary school to actively engage participants in a U.S. classroom environment. Cultural enrichment, mentoring, and support will be provided to participants throughout the program.
Eligibility Requirements
Current secondary-level, full-time teachers of English, math, science, or social studies—including special education teachers in those subjects—at institutions primarily serving a local population are eligible. Applicants must:
- Have a minimum Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent.
- Have completed at least five years of full-time teaching before the program’s start date.
- Be secondary-level teachers at the middle and/or high school level serving students between approximately 12 and 18 years of age. Teachers responsible for additional or other grades must teach middle or high school students at least 50% of the time to be eligible for TEA.
Competitive applicants have demonstrated evidence of leadership in their schools or districts.
TEA is an upper-level university or graduate level academic program for practicing teachers.
- Those who are not eligible include: Administrators, e.g., Ministry of Education or school administrative officials who do not teach at least 50% of the time; full-time teacher trainers; university faculty; private English language tutors; and teachers from schools primarily serving expatriates. Applicants must reside in Côte d’Ivoire at the time of application and program participation.
Candidates must have sufficient oral and written English language skills to take part in rigorous and specialized seminars and be able to give presentations in English at U.S. schools. Selected participants must demonstrate English language proficiency and score at least 450 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the equivalent on a similar exam. Preference will be given to candidates with no previous travel to the United States on a U.S. government exchange program, and to those from traditionally under-represented areas or serving student populations in marginalized communities and schools.
