Embassy Abidjan assembled more than 1,500 volunteers, including civil society groups, alumni of U.S. exchange programs, government officials, corporate sponsors, and U.S. Mission families, for the largest ever Earth Day celebration and cleanup in Cote d’Ivoire on April 21.

The effort covered two kilometers of beach in Grand Bassam. Chargé d’Affaires Katherine Brucker opened and closed the event with a speech encouraging participants to continue their efforts to organize for the greater good of their communities and country.

The effort was covered by national television and more than 25 other news organizations. The effort was conducted in partnership with alumni of the Washington Mandela Fellowship, Coca-Cola, a plastic bottle recycling firm Corydoras, the International University of Grand Bassam, and the local hotel owners’ association of Grand Bassam.
